Gold reserves in Pakistan
February 1, 2011
Pakistan's Minister for Petroleum Syed Naveed Qamar on Tuesday told the Upper House Senate that Pakistan has reserves of 1339.25 tons of gold and more than 70 tons of silver.
According to correspondent Ijaz Mehr, in response to a question from Najma Hameed during Question Hour, he said that these deposits are present in Sendak and Rico Dick fields in Chaghi district of northwestern Balochistan.
Naveed Qamar informed the House that Sendak mine has deposits of 63 and a half tons of gold and seventy five tons of silver. The Ricoh Dick mine has 1275 tons of gold reserves.
He said that in the five years from 2005 to 2009, more than 158 tons of gold and more than 11 tons of silver have been extracted. Production has not yet begun at the Ricoh Duck mine.
The contract for the Sendak project is with a Chinese company and has been working on it for many years. But so far no refinery has been set up in Pakistan to separate raw materials and separate copper, gold and silver. Due to which, according to experts, investment companies prefer to extract cheap raw materials and clean them from outside.
The contract to extract gold and copper from the Ricoh Duck mine has been awarded to Tethian Copper Company, a joint venture of two Canadian companies. The company has been issued an exploration license. Now the company wants to acquire mining rights.
Samia Ali Shah, a spokeswoman for the Tethyan company, said the raw material would be brought through a 680-kilometer pipeline from the Reiko Duk mine in the Chaghi desert to Gwadar Port, which would be sent out for refining.
According to the spokesperson, the company will spend ارب 3.3 billion on the project and it is the largest project in terms of foreign direct investment in Pakistan.
Twenty-five per cent of the cost of the project will be borne by the Balochistan government and the Tethyan company will arrange an interest-free loan for them, which they will have to repay in ten to fifteen years. According to him, Balochistan will get 25% share in the profits and the company will pay 25% more to the government in terms of royalties and taxes.
He said that Tethyan has spent کروڑ 220 million on exploration and the Balochistan government has not spent anything on it. According to him, 200,000 tonnes of copper and 250,000 ounces of gold are expected to be extracted from the 600,000 tonnes of material extracted annually from the Ricoh Dak mine for 56 years.
The Supreme Court has taken cognizance of the awarding of a contract to Ricoh Dick Mine to Tethyan Company and the case is pending.
So far, the company has not received the contract, but according to the lawsuit, the rules and regulations are being violated in awarding the contract to Ricoh Field and the company concerned is being benefited.
The court adjourned the case till Wednesday and asked the Balochistan government for the original documents of the agreement with the company.
